How To Determine The Right Water Softener Size

1. Average Daily Water Usage

The first step is to figure out how much water your family uses each day by calculating the average daily water use per person for your household.

How? Assess your fall or winter water bills. This gives you the best look at your indoor water use since you are not watering your garden, filling your pool, or washing your vehicles during these seasons.

Your water consumption is given in cubic metres. Divide this number by the number of billing days for that period. Both of these figures should be listed on your bill.

If your bill is measured in gallons, remember that 1 gallon = 3.785 litres.

To illustrate, let’s look locally.

The average person in Waterloo Region uses about 195 litres of water per day.

If you have 4 people in your household, then you would multiply 51.5 litres by 4, meaning your home uses 206 litres of water per day on average.

WATER SOFTENER SIZE DEPENDS ON HOW MUCH WATER YOU USE

2. Water Hardness Level

This refers to the amount of dissolved calcium and magnesium in your water.

It is measured in grains per gallon, where 1 grain per gallon equals 17.1 milligrams per litre.

The following chart gives you a rough idea of the water hardness level in the area, as well as around the country.

If you are using a private well you should get your water hardness and iron tested separately in order to get your hardness rating.

To see your water hardness level, check out the water hardness maps for the Kitchener-Waterloo region.

3. Grains of Hardness Your Softener Must Remove Per Day

Here is a handy formula To calculate your household's grains of hardness that need to be removed daily.

Plug in your information and go from there.

For example, let’s say you have 4 people in your home and your average daily water consumption per person is 52 gallons of water. Additionally, your water hardness level is 28. You would do the following calculation:

4 x 52 x 28 = 5,824

5,825 grains of hardness must therefore be removed daily.

This figure determines the water softener size for you.

Back to the example above. If your family needs to remove 5,824 grains of water hardness per day, then you should purchase a water softener with a 48,000-grain capacity.

I went here for a second opinion and to have my water hardness tested after terrible service (and multiple visits) from another company. This place has unbelievable customer service. Very knowledgeable and informative, not to mention generous with their time. They truly went above and beyond and sent me home with a zero-dollar bill -and the knowledge needed to fix my water softener
