Why You Need a Water Treatment System

Whether you’re drawing water from the municipal system or from a private well, a water treatment system can do everything from softening the water to removing harmful contaminants.

Here are the main options for a water treatment system:

1. Reverse osmosis

2. Water softener

3. Dechlorinator

4. Basic filtration

Why You Need a Water Treatment System, Kitchener-Waterloo

A water treatment system improves the quality of the water coming into your home.

Let’s take a look at the most common solutions.

1. Reverse osmosis

If you get your drinking water from a private supply like a well, it may not be safe from microbiological, chemical, or other types of contamination.

Reverse Osmosis is a water treatment system that removes dissolved substances while still giving you great-tasting water.

It’s a water purifying process that forces water through a semi-permeable membrane that has very small holes or "pores”. Clean water passes through the membrane and contaminants are flushed away.

There are many different brands of reverse osmosis systems. It’s important to buy one that is high quality and also includes a carbon filter to block dangerous chemicals like pesticides, herbicides, and chlorine which are small enough to pass through less sophisticated filters.

We recommend the Duro Reverse Osmosis water treatment system.

It seems complex, but a Reverse Osmosis unit produces no noise other than the normal sound of water draining.

2. water softener

A water softener is a very common home water filter system, especially if you live in an area that has hard water.

By softening your water softener, you solve a wide range of hard water problems in your home including:

  1. Buildup and residue in tubs, showers, pipes and faucets

  2. Spotty dishes and flatware

  3. Dry and itchy skin

  4. Laundry that feels stiff and looks discoloured

  5. Appliance lifespan

If you have hard water, it contains large amounts of dissolved minerals such as calcium and magnesium. A water softener will remove these minerals that cause your water to be hard.

3. Dechlorinator

Whole-home dechlorination is the process of removing chlorine from the water supply before it reaches your faucets.

According to the Government of Canada, “chlorine is a disinfectant added to drinking water to reduce or eliminate microorganisms, such as bacteria and viruses, which can be present in water supplies.

“The addition of chlorine to our drinking water has greatly reduced the risk of waterborne diseases.”

Be that as it may, chlorinated water can also have a very specific, sometimes unpleasant smell that turns many off from drinking it.

Additionally, you might be bothered by the taste of chlorinated water.

Another way to remove chlorine from drinking water is by filtering it through a pitcher.

There are many to choose from, and most are quite effective at minimizing chlorine levels.

4. basic Filtration

Fridge filters are a very convenient and inexpensive way to get filtered water.

Once they have removed a certain amount of contaminants, though, fridge filters are no longer effective. They need to be replaced periodically, usually about once a month.

While they’re relatively inexpensive to replace, they don’t remove as many substances from your water as reverse osmosis.

Similarly, you could also add a water filtration attachment to your faucet.

Faucet mounted filters are relatively easy to use, install, and clean. You can remove them and take them with you if you move which makes them a good choice if you’re in a rental unit.

However, keep in mind that they are not very attractive to look at and they can ruin the look of an otherwise beautiful tap. They can also decrease the rate of flow of your water from your tap.

WaterSmart carries fridge filters for almost every make and model of refrigerator in the market. If you need a filter that we don't currently carry, we will find a way to get it and add it to our offering so you will never have to search for it again.

I had a softener and a reverse osmosis installed 6 months ago. Professional and good at what they do. Had an issue with the RO draining, they came in and fixed the issue, diagnosed quickly and made a decision on what to do quickly. Wonderful company I highly recommend them.
